GENERAL INFORMATION
The Baltic GIS portal is hosted by GIS Group of the Institute of Ecology of Vilnius University, which currently acts as GIS/Data Coordination Center of the Baltic Sea Regional Project (HELCOM ). We work in close technical co-operation with HNIT-Baltic Geoinfoservisas private GIS company in Vilnius. The general missions of the our non-profit service are strengthening of institutional and personal links within the Baltic Sea regional GIS/RS community, accumulation and spreading of experience in development of regional GIS databases and Remote Sensing applications, as well as on-line delivery of spatial data, produced or processed at the Institute of Ecology.
Services: In addition to routine GIS/RS data production for the Baltic Sea Regional Project, we also offer our users a broad range of special services, related to design of information systems,
data processing, analysis and visualization (design of GIS/database systems; GIS data conversion,
integration and production, geostatistical processing of raw spatial data, conversion, processing and classification of satellite imagery, quality control of GIS databases, creation of thematic maps, etc.). We also provide training on GIS/RS/data analysis for small groups of dedicated users.
Access: To get free access to our resources, you should first register on this web site (we need this for accounting and in order to limit the volume of downloads). We recommend that you should also fill in your personal info and sign for the Newsletter, so make sure that you don`t miss our announcements.
Copyrights: All data and documents published on the Baltic GIS portal have no copyrigh restrictions, unless otherwise specified for certain items. The BSRP GIS Coordination Center on its turn does not apply any restrictions on the use of data, other than full and proper reference to this on-line service and data origin and obligation not to use the products for gaining of profit.
Contact: Please contact us with your requests, remarks or proposals related to this service. WebMaster - Dr. Gedas Vaitkus (e-mail: gedas@ekoi.lt; skype: gedas_vaitkus). |

DATA AVAILABLE ON THE BALTIC GIS PORTAL
GIS database of the Baltic Sea drainage basin (ETRS89_LAEA CRS): - Boundaries: Baltic Sea GIS database boundary;
- Coast line: GSHHS Baltic Sea coast line (scale 1:250,000) LINE and POLYGON coverages;
- Elevation: Digital Elevation Models of the Baltic Sea drainage basin extracted from Global GTOPO30, SRTM_GTOPO30, SRTM30-Plus databases;
- Bathymetry: raster grids and polygon coverages of the Baltic Sea bottom topography were computed with ArcGIS Spatial Analyst software (KRIGING) from the original IOWTOPO database with spatial resolution of 1000 m, 500 m, 250 m and 100 m;
- Map base images: RGB images of painted relief made from Digital Elevation Models of the Baltic Sea drainage basin extracted from Global GTOPO30, SRTM_GTOPO30, SRTM30-Plus databases designed mainly for visualization and digital cartography purposes, as they contain no actual numerical data;
- Base-map GIS data: US National Imagery and Maping Agency (NIMA) Vector Map (VMap) Level 0 (scale 1:1,000,000 gazetteer) dataset including >30 thematic layers of Boundaries, Elevation, Hydrography, Industry, Physiography, Population, Transportation, Utilities and Vegetation classes;
- Geographic site-names: GIS datasets containing Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) database thematic classes (site-names of administrative regions, populated places, localities, as well as hydrographic, hypsographic, spot, transportation, undersea and vegetation features) downloaded from GEOnet Names Server (GNS);
- Protected areas: Sub-sets from the latest (2006) update of World Database on Protected Areas, containing information on their status, environment and management;
- Environmental data: 1 km resolution raster land cover of ~1990 (GLCF) and 1992-1993 (GLCC - 7 thematic raster datasets);
- Climate data: WORLDCLIM generalised 1 km resolution climate data raster grids (1950-2000 monthly averages of min, max temperature, precipitation and a set of 19 bioclimatic variables).
- Population data: A collection of Baltic Sea regional extracts from the Gridded Population of the World v3 dataset resampled into 5000 m pixel size.
GIS Database of Europe (ETRS89_LAEA CRS): - Boundaries: European GIS database boundary;
- Coast line: GSHHS European coast line (scale 1:250,000) LINE and POLYGON coverages;
- Elevation: Digital Elevation Models of Europe extracted from Global GTOPO30, SRTM_GTOPO30, SRTM30-Plus databases;
- Protected areas: Sub-sets from the latest (2006) update of World Database on Protected Areas, containing information on their status, environment and management;
- Climate data: WORLDCLIM generalised 1 km resolution climate data raster grids (1950-2000 monthly averages of min, max temperature, precipitation and a set of 19 bioclimatic variables).
- Population data: A collection of pan-European extracts from the Gridded Population of the World v3 dataset resampled into 5000 m pixel size.
Collections of Satellite images: A collection of original LANDSAT scenes: LANDSAT Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM), Thematic Mapper (TM) and Multi Spectral Scaner (MSS) images downoaded from public domain sources (mainly - from Global Land Cover Facility (GLCF) EarthSat collection published on FTP server of the University of Maryland in USA), covering the entire Baltic Sea drainage basin. Spectral bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 of ETM and TM scenes with 28.5 m pixel resolution were assembled into 6-band multispectral images (thermal band 6 is omitted). Spectral bands 1, 2, 3 and 4 of MSS scenes with 79 m pixel resolution were assembled into 4-band multispectral images. Panchromatic band 8 of ETM scenes with 14.25 m pixel resolution were extracted into separate grey scale images. All images were processed into ERDAS Imagine file format and compressed with RAR software. Currently ~400 original LANDSAT scenes from different sensors are available in the Downloads section of the portal.

 | Advantages of using GIS Services |
ranjan writes "A sound understanding of geography is needed in every step of a petroleum industry starting from locating a place to drill a well, route a pipeline from the exploration site to the refinery plant, finding an ideal location for a refinery and lot more.
The use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is gathering momentum in Oil and petroleum industry as a powerful tool for analyzing and displaying data.
GIS services can be applied in various stages during the development of projects, including: Petroleum Exploration, Production, Managing Facilities & Pipeline Management "

 | Events: EU INSPIRE Directive entered into force |
Directive 2007/2/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 14 March 2007 establishing an Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community (INSPIRE) entered into force on the 15th May 2007. See the official announcement and full text of the directive (EN).
This is indeed a great day for all those in Europe, who were fighting for freedom of spatial information, including us here in Lithuania :)

 | Portal: Data gallery and Forums closed on the portal |
Yesterday we switched the Data Gallery (albums of data previews) and Forums sections on the Baltic GIS Portal. The decision was made due to the following reasons: (1) maintenance of the Gallery requires too much time and effort (in fact, a double work - the same meta-data info has to be loaded both into Downloads and Gallery sections, also there must be a cross-linking between both of them) and (2) Forums were used very little by our users, while loading this component with every access to the portal makes it work much slower, also imposes certain security and spamming threats. However, we will certainly continue maintenance of the data preview functionality on the Portal, and it is already fixed all over the Downloads section. We supplied an additional DATA PREVIEW link for each of the dataset in the Downloads section, where users can get fast 600x600 pixels preview pictures of the real data. Also, if there will be a special interest of our users, we will certainly activate Forums on our portal again in future.
